A Cook's Guide to Chicago

Saturday, June 26, 2004
starting at 10 AM

Devon Avenue is home to Indian spice shops, Pakistani sweet shops, Halal butcher shops, and produce stores with colorful jumbles of everything from fresh turmeric to snake gourd. Marilyn Pocius and Julie Gibson Lay, owners of Edible Chicago Tours, will lead the way through a fascinating and mysterious array of foodstuffs. Wear your walking shoes and bring a shopping bag to tote home some treasures!

We’ll start with a traditional Northern Indian breakfast to get in the mood for your exploration. As we visit the markets, you’ll learn where to get the freshest spices in town. You’ll discover new curry pastes and chutneys that belong in every food lover’s pantry and encounter exotic delights like bitter melon and curry leaves.

After shopping we’ll lunch at Hema’s Kitchen where the charming chef and owner, Hema Potla, will speak to us about the food we are enjoying and her philosophy of using only fresh ingredients to prepare her traditional spice blends, sauces and chutneys. She has also promised to share a recipe or two with us. The tour will close with a book signing and goodie bag filled with treats and recipes to take home.
