When and where was the grape born? Who was the woman believed to have discovered wine? Who was Bacchus before he was promoted to god of wine? What aromatic compound in wine stimulates the libido?

These and other fascinating aspects of the world of wine are contained in the multi-media presentation. It is a vibrant, humorous as well as erotic presentation, as any Bacchanalian history should be.

In homage to the age-old intertwining of wine and art, Mr. Jan Shrem, owner of Clos Pegase winery, created this presentation as a survey of wine’s ancient sources and the art it has inspired. The result of a quarter of a century of research, it begins with the birth of the grape and the origin of wines as illustrated in Egyptian tomb paintings and Roman mosaics. We then meander through over 100 wine-related images from such artists as da Vinci, Rembrandt, Dali, Picasso and Chagall, finishing with our contemporary homage to wine. The presentation has been given hundreds of times, including the National Press Club in Washington.



The Cliff Dwellers is a private club that has a breathtaking, panoramic view of Chicago’s lakefront from the 22nd floor. It is made even more eye filling by a collection of renowned skyscrapers that frame the scene. With views in three directions, this penthouse setting with its spectacular terrace is one of the Club’s most envied assets. Founded in 1907, the Club’s mission is to support and celebrate the arts. Sculptor Lorado Taft and Chicago Symphony conductor Frederick Stock were members. ChicaGourmets! is honored to be joining Cliff Dwellers members for this stunning evening of food, wine, music, learning and camaraderie.


Price is $75.00 per person, for members, or $85.00 for non-members.
